Pasquale De Antonis: Roman Post-WWII Aristocratic Fashion

Pasquale De Antonis (1908-2001) specialized in shooting them in correspondingly haute couture settings: gallerias and palazzos belonging to the nobility, and so forth.

The model in this first photo, for instance, was a blue-blood.

Marella Caracciolo di Castagneto wearing Carosa in Palazzo Torlonia, 1948

from "La Farnesina," Belezza #31, October 1948

Canova's sculpture of Pauline Bonaparte Borghese come to life, wearing a white fox cape by Balzani, Galleria Borghese, 1947

from "La Moda Nella Città Eterna," I Nuovi Tessili #37, July-August-September 1948

from "La Moda Nella Città Eterna," I Nuovi Tessili #37, July-August-September 1948

from "La Moda Nella Città Eterna," I Nuovi Tessili #37, July-August-September 1948

Scans and info from Italian Eyes: Italian Fashion Photographs from 1951 to Today.
Milan, Condé Nast, 1984

(b. 1926 - d. 1995) Alfa Castaldi began his photographic career in 1954, depicting the social life of his native Milan for Italian magazines, moving into fashion photography in the 60's, when he provided images for Novità (became Vogue Italia in 1966), Linea Italiana, and Arianna. By 1969 he was one of the major contributors to Vogue Italia. At the end of the 60's, opening a studio in Milan, he expanded into advertising, creating campaigns for the likes of Giorgio Armani, Laura Biagiotto, Fendi, Gianfranco Ferré, Karl Lagerfield, and Ottavio and Rosita Missoni. His magazine coverage expanded as well, with his work appearing in L'Uomo Vogue, Vanity, Vogue Bambini, Vogue Sposa, and, outside the Condé Nast group, Amica, Panorama, and L'Espresso.

Starting as a freelance fashion photographer in 1965, his photos were featured in Belleza, Linea Italiana, Marie Claire France, New York Magazine, Lei, Mondo Uomo, Donna, and all the editions of Harper's Bazaar, Elle, Stern, Esquire, GQ, and Vogue. From the end of the 60's to 2000 he also worked in fashion advertising, creating imagery for ad campaigns by Jesus Jeans, Chanel, Esprit, Valentino, and United Colors of Benetton (1984-2000), among others.
If you shrink the second one down and squint at it real hard, it almost looks sort of like Madonna:

Madonna was four years old at the time.

Spooky!

Ugo Mulas (b. 1928, d. 1973) is credited with revitalizing Italian fashion photography by connecting it with the contemporary art world. From his beginning as a professional photographer in 1954, he always measured his compositions with the utmost care, treating his sets, models, and the clothes they wore as carefully sculpted forms. In the 60's he became fascinated with the art experiments taking place in New York, documenting his experience with Warhol and others in his 1967 photography book New York: The New Art Scene. Working for Novità throughout the period when it was purchased by Condé Nast, and finally transformed into Vogue Italia in 1966, Mulas played a key role in creating a new international image of Italian style. His heirs maintain his estate's official web site, [ugomulas.org].
